An artist explains the reason and message behind the Homeland graffiti hack.
When producers of the hit American series Homeland asked Berlin artists to decorate TV sets with Arabic graffiti, they got more than what they bargained for.
Tasked with creating an authentic refugee camp, the Arabian Street Artists collective painted slogans like “Homeland is not a series,” “#BlackLivesMatter” and “Homeland is racist” onto the set walls.
Because the producers didn’t care what the graffiti meant, the artists decided to insert their own message and criticize the series for what they perceive is “degrading people and cultures” by stereotyping the Arab and Muslim world to the point of racism.
