As there is no regulation of the adult entertainment industry, the average age when someone watches their first porno is 11. The danger of learning about sex from pornography leads to warped perceptions about sexuality, affecting the choices young adults make when they decide to join the industry.
Amateur porn sounds like it isn’t real pornography. But it is just another genre—one that draws viewers because it appears more realistic. It involves young women, scarcely older than 18, who often find themselves doing things on camera they never imagined they’d do.
The well-rehearsed argument goes like this: Women who act in pornographic films are making money, and therefore, theirs is an empowered choice.
Rashida Jones, best known for her comedic Hollywood roles, questions the conflation of porn and popular culture in her documentary, exploring how the ubiquitous, myopic message that your sex is what makes you valuable limits women’s choices.
