Description
Fair Observer Monthly is a chance for you to sit down, look back and think about the month past. A month lasts 28 to 31 days, a suitably appropriate time to take stock of the world. We publish daily on our website and we select some of our best articles every month in our e-magazine. We will give you context and multiple perspectives on issues that matter. We will inform and educate you. Fair Observer Monthly does what we promise: make sense of the world.
In January, Fair Observer took a close look at China. David Mahon takes a deep dive into the Chinese economy, challenging pessimists with evidence that the manufacturing giant remains strong. Patrik Meyer gives an up-to-date and on-the-ground perspective on Xinjiang, inviting us to revise the ideas we have about the region which might be outdated. And we look across the strait with David Kuehn to Taiwan, where this East Asian democracy held a presidential election under the threat of Chinese subversion.
Taiwan is not the only country to be holding elections this year; in fact, 2024 will see national elections in as many as 76 countries. Malwina Talik provides the example of Poland as a blueprint for democratic parties opposing far-right forces. Daniel Martinek gives us a look at what happens when subversive authoritarians achieve power, as they have in Slovakia.
We are also keeping our eyes on Gaza as the conflict that began in 2023 spills into another year. Gary Grappo gives his analysis of the growing challenges facing Israel after months of fighting. Alan Waring meditates on injustices in Palestine and in his native Britain. Naley by Nature shares a personal story of travel to the West Bank and her encounter with a former member of Hamas.
